Fencing Outdoors in Fort Ticonderoga

It looks like joining the "veterans" league this month gave Alain Lefebvre new wings. Last Sunday, May 29th, he was the one to represent Canada at the annual outdoors epee challenge in Fort Ticonderoga (New York), on the beautiful Lake Champlain. Despite moody weather and a rain date, which the tournament managed to avoid for so many years, 32 fencers came to cross blades in this historical site. And Alain took the honours winning a gold medal and a trophy in a tight 15-14 bout against Chris Young from VFA, best favourite after the pools. Bravo Alain! Keeping up with EMR's high standards: the gold was once already ours with Ilya Krouglikov winning the challenge in 2008.

AAA & Veteran Championships, May 14, Montreal

It was certainly a good day for Alain Lefebvre, the new provincial veteran epee champion! Alain just turned 40 to pass the cap of the veterans a few weeks ago, so it was his first competition in the new pool - and the largest veteran event of the season with 24 participants. Bravo! Alain also finished in the top 8 of the AAA championship, defeating his teammate Stéphane Deschamps. Meanwhile, still among the veterans, Andrew Cashen won bronze in sabre after a tight 15-14 bout against Peter McLaughlin, also a teammate from EMR. Last but not least, Mirna Monla finished the day with a silver medal in senior women's foil. Congratulations!

Moyana won the women's epee event in a tight 15-14 bout, while Juan Carlos took over Alain Lefebvre, thus silver medalist, in an all EMR final. Congratulations!

Terre des Hommes, Sept 5-7, Longueuil

The first competition of the season was unexpectedly popular with over a hundred fencers in epee alone! It was also a good start for EMR. Congratulations to Moyana Orozco for her bronze medal in WE (3 out of 35) and to Ilya Krouglikov for a solid top 8 result in ME (7 out of 79)! Our men's epee team surprised the opponents with truly international tricks and skills: Juan Carlos Astorga, Jean-Claude Beaudoin, Ilya Krouglikov and Hemanta Singh Ningombam went undefeated through the round of pools and the quarter-final bout, finally yielding the bronze to the team from Ottawa with a heartbreaking 42-43 in overtime (4 out of 11). A touch away from glory and medals, we had a lot of fencing and as much fun. Congratulations team!

Due to the coming holidays (June 24, July 1) and the need to prepare for the Canadian Championships to be held June 26 to 29, we modify our schedule for the next two weeks. Thus, Monday (23), Tuesday (24), Wednesday (25) and Thursday (26) will be regular training nights. Note that special accomodation will be done to assure access to the club facilities on Tuesday June 24, despite the official holiday. You may need to call the club's phone number (514-483-6944) that night if you face a locked door at the building's entrance. Monday June 30, Wednesday July 2 and Thursday July 3 will also be regular training nights. The club will be closed on Friday June 27, Tuesday July 1 and Friday July 4.

As some of you may remember, this weekend Montreal is hosting a Grand Prix where the best international fencers will compete to improve their FIE standing for the upcoming Olympic Games in Beijing. The tournament will be strong and spectacular, so don't miss this opportunity to watch the world's finest blades cross!

Wireless Foil in 2008

The FIE has recently changed its equipment requirements for senior competitions in foil. As of January 2008, masks with transparent visors and wireless scoring systems will be mandatory in Grand Prix, Worlds Championships and Olympic Games.

Shon came first out of 54 fencers, defeating the gold medalist of the last youth tournament (Nov 3-4, Sainte-Anne) Alban De La Rue from Les Dynamiques de Brébeuf in the top 8. RMC Invitational, Nov 3, Kingston

RMC Invitational is the biggest team tournament in North America and a great opportunity to fence in a friendly environment. For quite a while now, the Royal Military College in Kingston has been inviting teams from Canada, USA and Great Britain for an annual rendezvous. The event is always open and accessible to local fencers, regardless of their level. Last year, EMR was represented by a female epee team who came very close getting a medal with a 4th place among 27 participants. Unfortunately, the ladies could not join the competition this time, but we prepared and sent a male team to replace them!

ME Teams: Since no formal restrictions regarding club affiliation apply at RMC Invitational, we invited Yann Bernard from Bois-de-Boulogne to join the troops with Ilya Krouglikov and Jean-Claude Beaudoin. Yann is a former member of national epee and foil teams with a lot of valuable experience! Although retired from international competition and seldom training, he remains a constant threat in all national tournaments. Defeating all opponents in the round of pools, our team went on winning two DE matches before yielding the silver medal to OTT from Ottawa at 41-45. EMR won the next bout 36-35 in overtime (thank you Yann!) against TFC-A from Toronto to end the day with bronze medals. Congratulations, team! 12 hours of fencing were certainly worth a souvenir...

AAA#1, Oct 27, Montreal

WE: Elena Frantova finished 5th (out of 12), losing to the bronze medalist Gabrielle Tétrault from Les Mousquetaires.

WF: Natalie Wee finished 6th (out of 8), losing to the bronze medalist Louisa Khelfaoui from Les Mousquetaires.

ME: Jean-Claude Beaudoin finished 6th (out of 49) in this well-attended event, giving way to the eventual gold medalist Benjamin Mappin-Kasirer from Les Dynamiques de Brébeuf. Shon Boublil finished the day with a 10th place after a leading 3rd position in the preliminary ranking. It was his debut in the AAA circuit, and Shon won 10 out of 11 bouts in pools with an impressive indicator and only 16 hits against him! Bravo, Shon! Jean-Daniel Azuelos and Alexei Perepelkine both ended up in the top 32, winning their first DE bouts. Alexei was unfortunately eliminated in the fratricidal match against Jean-Claude, his regular training partner.

MS: Brian Wong finished 16th (out of 32), conceding the victory to the eventual gold medalist Jean-Charles Christin from Les Dynamiques de Brébeuf.

Ticonderoga Challenge, May 26, NY

The Ticonderoga Challenge is a big friendly outside competition in mixed epee that takes place in a splendid historical fort (Fort Ticonderoga) in the state of New York, about 200 km from Montreal. If the weather is benevolent (and it has been such for many consecutive years), an unforgettable experience is at stake. This year, Jean-Claude Beaudoin was our only ambassador at the tournament, and a very successful one : he brought home a bronze medal! Jean-Claude finished 3rd (out of 53), losing by one point only to the eventual winner of the competition Luke Clemmons. Congratulations, Jean-Claude!

AAA Championship, April 1, Montreal

Our female foilists made this last event of the AAA circuit quite memorable. With two medals and a promising debut in the top 8, the team is getting strong and dangerous. Moreover, the third medal in a row for Swee Leng Tan secured her the top position in the AAA ranking this year. Congratulations, Swee! Well done, ladies!!!

WF: Swee Leng Tan won the competition with the convincing scores of 15-6, 15-11 and 15-11 in her elimination bouts. With a second gold medal over the past 3 months, Swee certainly deserves the title of the 2007 AAA champion! We are very proud of her success after many years of uneven performances. Melita Hadzagic and Zita Matay-Zambo both lost to the silver medalist Malinka Hoppe from Collège Régina-Assumpta, thus finishing 3rd and 8th respectively among 13 participants. It was the first medal for Melita, bronze to start with. Way to go, Melita! Zita's debut in the AAA circuit was very promising as well: we have reasons to hope for a solid WF team in the near future.

ME: Jean-Claude Beaudoin and Alexei Perepelkine ranked in the top 16 and top 32 respectively (out of 45), both falling against the same mysterious opponent, Nicholas Tatrallyay from McGill.

MF: Benjamin Justus finished 9th (out of 28).

AAA #3, March 10, Montreal

WE: Elena Frantova overcame the difficulties in pools to finish the day with a silver medal (out of 8), yielding the victory by only only two points to Andréanne Demers from Collège Régina-Assumpta. Congratulations, Elena!

WF: Swee Leng Tan and Melita Hadzagic finished 2nd and 6th respectively (out of 10), both conceding to Laurence Côté from the host club. Swee thus earned her second medal in a row in the AAA circuit! Congratulations, Swee!

ME: Alexei Perepelkine, Jean-Claude Beaudoin and Francois Riffaud all finished in the top 32 (out of 37). François, who made his debut in the AAA circuit, fought with great confidence in pools and then gave way to the eventual bronze medalist Thomas Delwaide from Collège Régina-Assumpta.

On Friday, Feb 2nd, we held our first Poule au vin. Those brave 8 who overcame fatigue and snow to join us were not disappointed. The pool was followed by a most challenging sudden death (one touch only) DE format. Derek Robertson used his Scottish powers to win both drinking and fencing events! Elena Frantova came 2nd, while Ilya Krouglikov and Brian Wong shared the 3rd place.

Congratulations to Shon Boublil, the winner of the Jeux du Quebec Qualifiers in Montreal. Shon earned his gold medal in a strong competition with 22 participants in the -15 age group.

Carleton Invitational, Jan 13-14, Ottawa

Carleton Invitational is the second biggest team tournament in Canada after the famous RMC Invitational in Kingston. It is a well-organized and friendly tournament. Last year, our ME team earned silver medals for finishing 2nd among 26 teams! This year, it is the turn of girls to make history.

ME Teams: With one defeat at 44-45 in the first round, our team (Jean-Claude Beaudoin, Alain Lefebvre, Alexei Perepelkine) was ranked 7th after the pools. Unfortunately, they lost in the round of 16, thus finishing 11th (out of 23).

WE Teams: With a perfect score of all victories, our team (Swee Leng Tan, Elena Frantova, Natalie Wee) was ranked 1st after the pools. They lost 44-45 to the silver medalist team from Ottawa, thus finishing 3rd (out of 15) with nice bronze medals. Congratulations, team! This result is yet another landmark for the team who finished 4th (out of 27) at the challenging RMC Invitational in November 2006 (with Anna Raffier as a substitute).

Challenge Desjarlais, Jan 6-7, Montreal

Challenge Desjarlais is the provincial team championship and one of the very few mixed team events in North America. This year, we sent a record number of teams to dominate our opponents, at least numerically: 4 in epee and 1 in foil for a total of 16 fencers involved! No other club had more than 2 teams competing in epee.

Epee Teams: Our 'D' team (Ilya Krouglikov, Jean-Claude Beaudoin, Elena Frantova) finished 4th (out of 15), losing to the eventual winner of the competition, the undefeated 'A' team from Estoc.

Foil Teams: Our team (Swee Leng Tan, Benjamin Justus, Melita Hadzagic, Anna Raffier) finished 5th (out of 6), losing to the eventual winner of the competition, the 'B' (and only) team from Olympia Montreal.

It was a good first team experience for some and a fair challenge for others. Both individual and team events were held on the same day, so most of us underwent an endurance test as well. On Sunday, our last troops left Centre Claude-Robillard around 9 pm, after more than 12 hours of fencing!

Épée/Fleuret/Sabre d'Or, Jan 6-7, Montreal

ME: Quite a few epeists took part in the individual event: Jean-Daniel Azuelos, Jean-Claude Beaudoin, Karl-Philippe Guérard, Ilya Krouglikov, Alexei Perepelkine, Derek Robertson. Klaus Reinhardt, the official German member of EMR spending his holidays in Montreal, also joined us for this competition. Derek and Jean-Claude reached the top 32 (out of 48), while Ilya finished 8th, losing to the eventual silver medalist Vincent Pelletier from Estoc.

MF: Benjamin Justus finished in the top 32 (out of 32), losing to the eventual silver medalist Jean-Francois Sigouin from Fleuret d'Argent.

WE: Elena Frantova finished 9th (out of 22).

WF: Swee Leng Tan and Melita Hadzagic both finished in the top 32 (out of 23).

Extra Training

There will a be an extra training session during the holidays on Friday, December 29th, from 11 am to 2 pm. The unusual morning hours will hopefully awake the spirit of competition in all the 16 (!!!) of us taking part in individual and team events at Epee d'Or on the first weekend of January. Holiday Schedule

The Club will be open and running as usual up to Thursday, Dec 21st. It will be the last fencing day before the building closes for happy holidays. Normal activities will resume on Wednesday, Jan 3rd, in the new and promising 2007. However, if people are interested in an extra training before New Year's, we could open the Club on Friday, Dec 29th. Please let us now if you would like to come and have your last 2006 fight at this occasion.

ME: Jean-Claude Beaudoin, Derek Robertson, and Ilya Krouglikov took part in the individual competition. Ilya finished in the top 16 with a 9th place (out of 42).

WE: Elena Frantova finished in the top 8 with a 5th place (out of 16), losing to the bronze medalist Adréanne Demers.

ME Teams: For the first time in many years we succeeded in sending two teams to this event. It was a debut for the EMR-B team (Karl-Philippe Guérard, Jean-Daniel Azuelos, Derek Robertson), while EMR-A team (Ilya Krouglikov, Jean-Claude Beaudoin, Alain Lefebvre) finished 6th (out of 10), losing to the eventual silver medalist team MDF-A.

ME: Alain Lefebvre and Jean-Claude Beaudoin both finished in the top 16 with 13th and 15th places respectively (out of 34), the latter losing to the eventual bronze medalist Thomas Delwaide.

MF: Benjamin Justus finished in the top 16 with a 10th place (out of 36), losing to the eventual bronze medallist Laurent Dumouchel.

WE: Elena Frantova reached the final and finished the day with a silver medal (out of 14), losing to the gold medalist and a former member of the Austrian junior team Justina Konczalski. Congratulations, Elena!

WF: Melita Hadzagic finished in the top 8 with a 5th place (out of 10), losing to the bronze medalist Julia Barette.
